Font of all reading
I am dyslexic. I used to see it as something to hide when I was at school and in higher education, but as I entered the workforce and started to learn that being neurodivergent compliments the rest of a team.
My dyslexia is more dyscalculia which is “a learning disorder that affects an individual’s ability to understand and work with numbers, whereas dyslexia primarily affects reading and processing written language”.
I have not struggled with reading too much. Reading aloud was something that I hated doing, but over the years I have improved. Which makes me think if there was an overlap between the two, so I started investigating.
So let’s define the differences Dyslexia primarily impacts reading and language-related skills, while Dyscalculia primarily impacts mathematical abilities. The interesting point is I struggle with memory, and I do see patterns and subtle changes that other don’t see. But based on my research, they are distinct. While there is some overlap, around 40% of people who have dyslexia have dyscalculia. So where is the overlap?
The image above is intriguing. I suffer from some of each side and in the middle I could be fully in confirmation bias mode but the idea that the mapping of the overlaps with the two conditions.
Therefore, I wanted to see if I can help myself get better at reading faster, increase my comprehension of numbers. My hypothesis was perhaps specific fonts or ligatures might help.
There are specific fonts for people with dyslexia and studies on the types, but in my searching there was nothing for helping with numbers. Therefore, I headed off to Perplexity and asked it some questions, then asked it to create me a page so that I can better understand myself but also to help share what I had found with anyone who might stumble across this post.
I intend to do some actual experimentation with different fonts and applications that support these fonts e.g. Kindle and see what works for me and hopefully spread some helpful information.
